In 1979, Ly Kim Chhuon and her family escaped the Killing Fields Genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Despite enduring such extreme hardship, Ly found her way to the United States, vowing to make the best of the opportunities America had to offer.
From humble beginnings as a housekeeper, Ly saved every penny she could to make her dream of owning her own business a reality. She worked long hours for low wages, learning the English language without assistance, all to achieve her goal of realizing the American Dream so many of us take for granted.
After many years of working low paying jobs, helping support her family and struggling to save as much as she could, Ly settled in California and opened Ly’s Donuts in 1993.
Strategically located near California’s Port of Long Beach, Ly’s Donuts became an instant local success by serving up delicious coffee, freshly made donuts, and breakfast sandwiches to the men and women traveling to work at the Port in the early morning hours.
In 2000,
Ly proudly achieved one of her most sought-after goals, becoming a Citizen of the United States. In 2012, Ly reorganized her business from a sole proprietorship and registered Ly’s Donuts as a Limited Liability Company with the California Secretary of State.
As Ly’s Donuts grew, Ly recognized that she needed to offer a more diverse menu to satisfy her growing customer base and wanted her business to project an inviting “California Vibe”. So, in 2016, Ly decided to offer additional menu items that would appeal to wider range of clientele and rebranded the business as Cali’s Just Chill.
Today,
in addition to Ly’s famous freshly brewed coffee, scrumptious donuts, and delicious breakfast sandwiches, Cali’s Just Chill offers unique and refreshing cold drinks inspired by the fusion of popular Asian and Latin flavors, healthy Fruit Smoothies and Acai Bowls, a wide variety of the ever-popular Boba (Bubble) Tea Drinks, delicious Ice Cream Sundaes, Banana Splits and Shakes, and multiple flavors of Cali’s signature Hawaiian Style Shaved Ice.
